J.Grant Brittain.

Who were your biggest influencers?
My earliset influencers were my parents, an art teacher named Doug Durrant, and a photo teacher at Palomar College, Kean Wilcox. When I started shooting skating, the 1970’s skate photogs Warren Bolster, James Cassimus, Jim Goodrich, CR Stecyk, Ted Terrebonne, William Sharp and Glen Friedman. When I started taking photo classes, Ralph Gibson, Walker Evans, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Minor White and Aaron Siskind. Later on, Keith Carter.

When were you first introduced to Photography?

Watching skate photographers at Del Mar Skate Ranch and thought it would be cool to shoot my friends so I borrowed my roommate’s Canon in 1979.

What is your favorite podcast?
Radiolab.

What type of music do you listen to when you’re shooting?
80s, New Order, Cure, Joy Division, Eno, Roxy Music, Devo, etc for skating
Ambient/Chill for Fine Art

What were you doing before you became a Photographer?
Art student at Palomar College and worked at Del Mar Skate Ranch
serving Cokes and Twinkies.

If you weren’t a Photographer, what would you be doing?
Something in Art, Design or Graphics.

What do you do when you get stuck?
Read a book, listen to music, go to a museum, surf.

What is your favorite curse word?
Shit.

What is your best marketing advice for your peers?
Use every Social Media avenue there is, don’t get stuck in your ways.

What advice would you give to yourself if you could go back 10 years? 20 years? Don’t sign any contracts and get everything in writing.
