STOP HIDING IT.

We know what you’ve been doing in there. Endless hours in that darkened room playing with it. It’s your little secret, but we are here to say it’s okay. We encourage it. In fact, we want to watch.

The most interesting and accomplished pieces will be selected and shown large, so compress to impress. ‘Editorial Photography: From Pulitzer to Portraiture’
Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Smith shares insights from his last 30 years in editorial photography as he moved from Pulitzer Prize-winning sports photographer to shooting celebrity portraits of Hollywood’s A-List. Smith will speak about both the art and commerce of editorial photography and what every artist needs to know about the business of photography to remain in business. In this presentation, Smith will share ways to grab and keep the attention of photo editors and art directors, how shooting personal projects can promote your vision and land the jobs you’ll love to shoot, and ways to keep your portfolio and vision fresher than next year’s winner of The X Factor.

Brian is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and a former winner of Pictures of the Year International, the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism program in the world (on view now at MOPA).

APA | SD presents: Personal Work Roundtable | July 17th, 2013

Photo: © Bil Zelman

PERSONAL WORK ROUNDTABLE

Clients make you shoot what they want, their way (more or less), but they hire you for what you make, your way. Today, your personal work is more and more important not only as a personal expression of your art, but also as a marketing tool. The trick is, it has to be work that really comes from within you and you have to be brave enough to show it.

Join your peers to discuss your personal work, how to best exploit it, and tricks and techniques to make more/better personal work. Please bring some work to share (fewer than 10 images, please), on your own media (laptop, iPad, or good ol’ print). Also, be prepared to share how you work making your own work and how you work it into your work schedule. Basically, what works for you.

This will not be a mutual admiration society (although compliments are certainly fine!) but rather a chance to learn from your peers and maybe push your creative boundaries a bit.

This will be a facilitated discussion, but this is really a chance for peers to explore this important part of your life and business.
