Anatomy of a Personal Project with Phillipp Scholz Rittermann

Join APA San Diego for the first of a series: The Anatomy of a Personal Project – and learn how to rekindle the spark that got you into this racket in the first place.

Philipp will share personal work, strategies to overcome the demons of self-doubt induced inertia, and how to get back out into the world.

About Philipp:

Temporal and spatial themes lie at the heart of Rittermann’s photographic practice. His imagery encompasses nocturnal scenes of industry, pristine landscape, and most recently, installations of large-scale transparencies, which surround the viewer.

Born and raised in Lima, Perú, Rittermann lived in Germany and Spain 
before immigrating to the United States in the early ’80s. His work is held in over one hundred public private, and corporate collections, including MoMA, NY, SFMoMA, CA, MFA, TX, Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France, and many others.

Rittermann has been teaching photography for over thirty years in the USA and abroad. He exhibits in national, and international venues, and was honored with a mid-career survey at the Museum of Photographic Arts San Diego, which published the monograph Navigating by Light. In 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego exhibited large-scale works from Emperor’s River, a photographic project he conducted in China. Emperor’s River has traveled to several museums across the country.

What type of music do you listen to when you’re shooting? 
I don’t have one genre that I stick to all the time but lately I’ve been bouncing back and forth between alternative bluegrass and classic rock.

Who were your biggest influencers?
Erik Almas for all around style, composites and narrative, Gregory Crewdson for lighting and narrative, Chris Jordan for meaning and intent, Edward Weston for striving for perfection and passion, plus he has a cool name, Arnold Friberg for defining a moment and Norman Rockwell for moments and humor.

What were you doing before you became a Photographer?
Property Management & Hotel Marketing.

When were you first introduced to Photography?
High School, would skip other classes to spend time in the dark room, but after High School couldn’t maintain a personal darkroom so it became a minimal pastime. When digital photography came around I bought a Nikon D40 kit. I think I paid around $1000 for the kit when it first came out, now I think you can buy it for around $100.

If you weren’t a Photographer, what would you be doing? 
Something in advertising and marketing maybe. If not that, a lawyer?

What do you do when you get stuck? 
Playing with my kids, they make me laugh and help me focus on what’s important. Plus kids have the greatest imaginations, if I could only create what they were thinking half the time. Road trips and taking pictures of anything and everything helps me clear my mind and start thinking of what I want to create and not just what I can take pictures of.

What is your favorite podcast?
The Last Picture (a couple of local San Diego photography friends just started it). I like it because it focuses on the photographer and the stories behind the images, which is always of interest to.

What is your favorite curse word? 
I have three kids, so I don’t curse (wink, wink)

What is your best marketing advice for your peers?
Define and know your target audience and don’t wait to start marketing yourself. Market what you have to those who want to see it.

What advice would you give to yourself if you could go back 10 years? 20 years?
Start creating the images you want to be remembered for.

Untitled 2017 Winners Announced

APA|SD would like to thank all of the attendees and participants who helped make the Untitled 2017 exhibition and auction a success. More than 140 entries were received and our judge, Dersu Rhodes, curated the top 20. The prints were displayed at Subtext gallery for a one-night only event and silent auction benefiting the Museum of Photographic Arts and prizes were awarded for the top 3 submissions and people’s choice.

Beggars Banquet with Todd Glaser and MOPA


Join us for APA|SD Beggars Banquet, a photographic talk featuring Todd Glaser and graciously hosted by MOPA. Glaser will be discussing his photo career and his recently published book “Proximity.” This is a special event benefiting Leucadia Photoworks and their recovery from a recent fire.

Todd Glaser is a San Diego-born photographer, surfer, and waterman. A SURFER Staff Photographer since 2008, Glaser is prolific for his young age, earning more than a dozen covers during his tenure at the magazine. Equally talented shooting land, water, and lifestyle photography, his work has also appeared in The New York Times, Outside, Rolling Stone, Men’s Health, GQ and the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. He recently released his first book titled Proximity: a 300 page hardbound color book documenting 8 of the worlds best surfers traveling to new waves around the world. When he isn’t globetrotting chasing swells, treading water shooting in the tropics, or capturing images of the first wave ever ridden at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch, Glaser can be found riding waves around his home on a variety of equipment types and enjoying the company of his wife, Jenna.

Leucadia Photoworks is a creative space for photographers in the San Diego area that recently suffered a tragic fire that forced them to close their doors. Although no one was harmed, many local photographers and friends lost their studio and workspace and we are helping give them a fresh start. With a new location and some support from friends, anything is possible. APA|SD is teaming up with MOPA and Todd Glaser and donating all ticket sales from this event to Leucadia Photoworks.

Untitled Exhibition & Photo Auction at Subtext Gallery

Join us at Subtext Gallery for a one-night only benefit auction of 20 photographic prints. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Museum of Photographic Arts. Who were your biggest influencers?
My earliset influencers were my parents, an art teacher named Doug Durrant, and a photo teacher at Palomar College, Kean Wilcox. When I started shooting skating, the 1970’s skate photogs Warren Bolster, James Cassimus, Jim Goodrich, CR Stecyk, Ted Terrebonne, William Sharp and Glen Friedman. When I started taking photo classes, Ralph Gibson, Walker Evans, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Minor White and Aaron Siskind. Later on, Keith Carter.

When were you first introduced to Photography?

Watching skate photographers at Del Mar Skate Ranch and thought it would be cool to shoot my friends so I borrowed my roommate’s Canon in 1979.

What is your favorite podcast?
Radiolab.

What type of music do you listen to when you’re shooting?
80s, New Order, Cure, Joy Division, Eno, Roxy Music, Devo, etc for skating
Ambient/Chill for Fine Art

What were you doing before you became a Photographer?
Art student at Palomar College and worked at Del Mar Skate Ranch
serving Cokes and Twinkies.

If you weren’t a Photographer, what would you be doing?
Something in Art, Design or Graphics.

What do you do when you get stuck?
Read a book, listen to music, go to a museum, surf.

What is your favorite curse word?
Shit.

What is your best marketing advice for your peers?
Use every Social Media avenue there is, don’t get stuck in your ways.

What advice would you give to yourself if you could go back 10 years? 20 years? Don’t sign any contracts and get everything in writing.
