What type of music do you listen to when you’re shooting?
I don’t have one genre that I stick to all the time but lately I’ve been bouncing back and forth between alternative bluegrass and classic rock.
Who were your biggest influencers?
Erik Almas for all around style, composites and narrative, Gregory Crewdson for lighting and narrative, Chris Jordan for meaning and intent, Edward Weston for striving for perfection and passion, plus he has a cool name, Arnold Friberg for defining a moment and Norman Rockwell for moments and humor.
What were you doing before you became a Photographer?
Property Management & Hotel Marketing.
When were you first introduced to Photography?
High School, would skip other classes to spend time in the dark room, but after High School couldn’t maintain a personal darkroom so it became a minimal pastime. When digital photography came around I bought a Nikon D40 kit. I think I paid around $1000 for the kit when it first came out, now I think you can buy it for around $100.
If you weren’t a Photographer, what would you be doing?
Something in advertising and marketing maybe. If not that, a lawyer?
What do you do when you get stuck?
Playing with my kids, they make me laugh and help me focus on what’s important. Plus kids have the greatest imaginations, if I could only create what they were thinking half the time. Road trips and taking pictures of anything and everything helps me clear my mind and start thinking of what I want to create and not just what I can take pictures of.
What is your favorite podcast?
The Last Picture (a couple of local San Diego photography friends just started it). I like it because it focuses on the photographer and the stories behind the images, which is always of interest to.
What is your favorite curse word?
I have three kids, so I don’t curse (wink, wink)
What is your best marketing advice for your peers?
Define and know your target audience and don’t wait to start marketing yourself. Market what you have to those who want to see it.
What advice would you give to yourself if you could go back 10 years? 20 years?
Start creating the images you want to be remembered for.
