APA | 2015 Sourcebook: Gain exposure for your photography for less than $1/day.

Fabris Mechanic

Exposing your work to photo buyers is a tough business. In recent APA panel discussions with the photo buying community we’ve learned a few things:

  • Photo buyers drown in hundreds of *spam* emails daily
  • With shorter production timelines, buyers are busier than ever
  • With the rise of social media, getting noticed is more difficult
  • Having a digital-only marketing strategy won’t get the job done
  • On average a well produced printed marketing piece gets noticed

With many photo buyers agreeing that printed materials cut through the clutter and get their attention – APA is proud to announce the printing of an annual Sourcebook that will be delivered to photo buyers and creatives across the country.

That’s right – APA has added a beautifully designed and printed Sourcebook to our member benefits. And, our Leader and Professional members receive a single page ad for free.

Our annual Sourcebook is a great addition to other APA member benefits designed to get your work exposure and get you in front of creative and photo buyers:

  • Portfolio reviews. APA hosts portfolio reviews that get our members a seat at the table to present directly to the photo buying and creative community. We have yearly reviews in the following markets: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Atlanta.
  • Portfolio in APA’s creative network.
  • Searchable member profile on APAnational.org
  • Featured member project on APAnational.org home page (seen by over 15,000 unique visitors per month).

For less than $1/day you can access time-tested APA benefits that help you get exposure to the right audience and grow your photography business. LEARN MORE

APA | SD presents: Nick Nacca | Super Control Freak | August 29th, 2015

mail.google.com

For Nick Nacca image making isn’t capturing a moment in time, its several moments combined. He’s a super control freak. Not just on set.  Later, in a dim room he builds an image from the ground up. Blending, shaping, sculpting with light is at the heart of his process that creates images that stand out in a world of clutter.  It’s not just a different approach to lighting; it’s a different way of seeing.

Join Nick & APA/SD for a hands on workshop where together we will photograph a vehicle then integrate models into the scene for a seamless composite.  Working images from the shoot will be made available to the attendees to create their own versions of the image.

This class is limited to 15 participants and includes lunch. 100% of the proceeds
go to support the San Diego chapter of American Photographic Artists.

When: Saturday, August 29th, 2015 from 10am-4pm

Where: Riverdale Studios, 6314 Riverdale Street San Diego, CA 92120

JOIN APA SAN DIEGO FOR A COPYRIGHT REFRESHER.

Do you take your copyright seriously?  Has your work ever been used without your permission? Do you file regularly? Ever? Don’t wait until your photography is stolen to acquaint yourself with copyright protection.

Intellectual property attorney Leslie Burns will walk you, step-by-step, through the process to register your copyrights using the eCO system. Registration is the key to protecting your work and getting paid for all those infringements you are finding! This presentation will show actual screenshots of a real registration so you will see what you need to do for a proper Group Registration of Published Photographs (the most complicated of the registrations).

Leslie will also explain the important details that can make or break your registration and point out common errors and myths. Bad registrations can turn your million-dollar suit into dust. Learn how to do them right!

Leslie Burns works primarily in copyright and resides in San Diego. She works closely with creative professionals on copyright and small business issues as a part of the Law Offices of Carolyn E. APA | SD presents: The Authentic Photograph with Bil Zelman Saturday, March 28th, 2015

APA_Zelman_Tease_1080pxH

THE AUTHENTIC PHOTOGRAPH with Bil Zelman

This workshop is for any photographer who wants to create and photograph truly genuine expressions; who’s primary subjects are people and who’s wish is to get inside their subjects’ heads and entice them to feel and react to things in a way that feels natural, in a way that’s prescribed, directed and controlled by you.

This class is limited to twelve participants, includes lunch with local beers. 100% of the proceeds go to the San Diego chapter of American Photographic Artists.

Through casual and entertaining roundtable style discussions, demonstrations, shoots and visual case studies, Zelman will walk you through a variety of shoot situations and send you home inspired and with fresh new thoughts on how to approach your subjects and your work.

  • Cultivating your subject’s confidence and trust – the foundation of authenticity
  • Portrait psychology – motivating your subject, reducing their anxieties
and getting them to open up
  • Creating and controlling your shooting environment – finding your light,
using closed sets, using and choosing less equipment
  • Unconventional casting techniques
  • Style vs. technique
  • The use of voice inflection, inner narratives, positive feedback,
    deliberate imperfections
  • Reading and sending body language – mirroring others’ moods and energy levels,
and how to get them to mirror yours
  • The use and timing of mood altering substances such as wine, sugar and caffeine
  • When to throw potatoes…and a million other things…

This is an intensive group class and together you will cover a ton of ground. Cameras, notepads and/or voice recorders are highly recommended!

 When: Saturday, March 28th 2015 from 9am-4pm
Where:

ABOUT BIL ZELMAN

Over the years Bil Zelman’s campaigns and editorial work has required his images to convey very specific expressions – satisfied vs. happy, pride, elation, celebration, rivalry, defeat, consolation, intelligence, being “lost”, absorbed, pensive and a slew of others.  Figuring out ways to make those people genuinely FEEL those emotions vs. acting them out is the secret to creating powerful, lasting imagery.

“Zelman’s lecture was so jam-packed with insight I couldn’t write fast enough. It was as if he dumped his entire life’s experience onto the table”!  John S. Photo Expo NYC 2013

“So very well thought out and insightful. (Zelman) has obviously spent a lot of hours deconstructing the minutia of his workflow and presented them in a way that will certainly improve my own work”.  Rachel P. Photo Expo NYC 2013

“Bil’s seminar was brilliant and hysterical and fast paced. He (really knows) how to cover a lot of ground efficiently and entertainingly.”  Anonymous attendee CSCA Ohio Stat

Zelman’s been attacked by a neck-biting monkey while snapping shots of sloths in the Amazon, floated on icebergs in Patagonia, sailed through the Bahamas with Alexandra Cousteau and shot in over 30 countries.  He’s partied with Gaga; cracked up the “it” girl of comedy, Kristen Wiig, getting her to squawk like a bird for a portrait; and shot David Bowie as his first megastar assignment at the ripe age of 20. Since then, Taylor Swift, the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Hawk, Jerry Seinfeld, and myriad other A-listers have all posed for him.

Consistently touted as a Top 200 photographer worldwide by Lürzer Archive, Zelman has shot and directed dozens of international advertising campaigns for brands such as CocaCola, Jim Beam, Harley Davidson, Bud Light, Guinness and Apple. His work has been shown or collected by The Museum of Photographic Arts, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Lucie Foundation, FCMOA, The Center for Photographic Arts, The Center for Fine Art Photography, The Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Arts,Newspace Center for Photography, The Portland Museum of Art and many others. His most recent book Isolated Gesture was awarded an Art Director’s Club award by Albert Watson.
